DIY Fruit and Vegetable Wash: Protecting Yourself from Herbicides

DIY Fruit and Vegetable wash: Protecting yourself from herbicides

Yesterday I read an article which really made me sad. Not sad because of the information that the article reported (it is a topic which I have been across for some time) but because it seems that the topic is one which does not get enough time in the media for people to learn more, and a topic which may be having the greatest influence on everyones health.

“U.S. regulators have relied on flawed and outdated research to allow expanded use of an herbicide linked to cancer, and new assessments should be urgently conducted, according to a column published in the New England Journal of Medicine on Wednesday.”

In summary the herbicide known as glyphosate is suggested to be a potential carcinogen (cancer causing compound). Glyphosate is a key ingredient in round up, as well as a key ingredient in around 700 other products.

In recent times there have been calls for reviews on this chemical and its place in modern day farming in Australia.

While there is a need to a certain extent for the use of chemicals in modern day farming from a financial perspective, in the mean time as consumers we can do something about our exposure, not only to glyphosate, but many different herbicides and pesticides.

Choosing organic/local/chemical free as possible. Knowing where your produce is coming from will not only make you more aware of what you are eating but you will be supporting local and Australian produce.

Another easy way to reduce your exposure is to make your own

FRUIT & VEGETABLE WASH

Clean your sink, or just put a big bowl into your sink.

Fill with the following solution:

3 parts filtered water to 1 part vinegar

1 tbsp sea salt

Soak your fruit and veggies for 20-30 minutes, after this time rinse with filtered water, allow to dry off and store accordingly

The vinegar helps to clean the surface of the produce, while the sea salt acts by drawing out any impurities. The final product is a cleaner food, which will stay fresher for longer.
