It is OK to break the rules and not just eat 3 meals a day

Today is Monday.

I have lived predominately off juice today, and a small piece of rice bread with avocado…a favourite go to snack for mine. Oh and a smoothie. Celery, apple, carrot and spinach are my main juicing ingredients today.

And I feel really good about todays food choices.

It is not how I eat everyday and for that reason I feel ok with it.

Over the weekend I had a lovely weekend away with my partner where we over indulged- food wise. Not normally a dessert couple we found a chocolate dessert cafe and we went to town!

While it was amazingly yummy it reminded me that I cannot eat like that. Ever! We both felt the wrath from the sugar overload and today I am paying the price. Low energy, easily distracted and next to no appetite.

I am giving my digestion a rest and my body is thanking me already.

This has got me thinking about how important it is to listen to your body. If you don't feel like eating, then you don't have to. But please be smart about it. There is a difference between not having an appetite, not eating and then having no energy later in the day and reducing the amount you eat after having a day of overindulgence. If this is you then you need to address why you don't have an appetite, and make are that you have a small snack to give you the energy to get trough the day.

Having a day off eating, or fasting, is a traditional form of medicine to allow the body to rest, especially the digestive system. So doing this once a week or equivalent is not going to be detrimental to your health. Heck look at the 5:2 diet and you will see people benefitting from this fasting style for weight loss.

Flip it..

Say you find you feel better when you eat more often, but small portions..then do this! This is a great way to balance your blood sugar as well as allowing your body to efficiently breakdown and digest your meals. This style of eating allows you to have a slow release of energy throughout the day so for the right person this is perfect. It also helps to boost your metabolic rate so it will help to facilitate weight loss.

So whats the best way for you to eat? It is completely up to you. Experiment and find what works for you.

Heres a tip: not eating at work and then binging when you get home is not a good idea for anyone, so don't try this!

Finding what style fits into your lifestyle, you appetite, your body. And stick with it. You should find that it is easier to make healthier choices, and easier to maintain as well.

How do you eat?
